"Positivism, proactivity and thinking out of the box are the key to any environmental challenge, including marine litter! "

I’m the coordinator of the Marine Litter Team of AZTI, an interdisciplinary team made of enthusiastic and creative people in search of new boundaries for marine litter solutions.

Oihane (BSc in Environmental Science, MSc Environmental Engineering) completed her PhD degree in the field of sustainability assessment of marine technologies at the School of Marine Science and Technology of Newcastle University, UK (2010). From the beginning of her carrier, she focused on finding solutions to different industries to help them be environmentally friendly. In the UK, she worked on national and international projects on ballast water management, carbon footprint analysis of shipping, and marine environmental and social sustainability. She joined AZTI in 2010, and since, she has been involved on research projects related to fishing, aquaculture and shipping, particularly on their interaction with marine litter, energy efficiency, non-indigenous species, and on leading these industries and relevant administration towards a sustainable development and management.

Some of her works include the coordination fo marine litter surveys at sea, establishing protocols for marine litter analysis at lab, development of technological solutions for riverine litter monitoring, involvement of the fishing sector in the fight against marine litter, and introducing the circular economy approach into the fishing sector and value chain stakeholders.

She and her team ares active on developing solutions for the fishing industry that are rooted in the circular economy. Examples of that are the initiatives focused on recycling end of life fishing and aquaculture gears to become new ropes for the industry, and textiels for different applications. She has been the promotor of the Fishing for Litter in the Basque Country. She was the Technical Coordinator of LIFE LEMA (https://www.lifelema.eu/en/), where she worked project that aimes to guide local authorities form the SE Bay of Biscay in applying tools and technologies to manage marine litter more efficiently.
