SEAQUAL INITIATIVE Cleanups
SEAQUAL INITIATIVE works with ocean cleanups around the world uniting the community and implementing a vertical supply chain to keep the process as local as possible in order to reduce the environmental impact.
Ocean cleanups are working hard to retrieve marine litter from our oceans, beaches, rivers and estuaries. Plastic waste, such as bags, bottles, and fishing nets, has become a common sight in our daily lives and one more element of nature. The magnitude of the consequences of plastic pollution has brought together an increasing number of people every year to fight against this problem.

OUR PLASTIC COLLECTION POINTS

Collection points of SEAQUAL INITIATIVE: Tunisia, Egypt, Vietnam, Mexico and Brazil.
TUNISIA AND EGYPT
In the case of Europe, our collection points are in Tunisia and Egypt. Once the marine litter is converted into SEAQUAL MARINE PLASTIC (clean flakes), it is sent to Spain, where we transform it into high-quality recycled polyester yarn at our headquarters in Girona. We counted on extensive expertise in the textile industry, brought to us by our two investors: ANTEX and VICA. Here you can watch the documentary about how the collection point on Kerkennah Island in Tunisia is working.
MEXICO - LATAM vertical chain
Our collection point in Mexico counts on a completely vertical chain in order to avoid unnecessary CO2 emissions. Once marine litter is gathered, it’s sorted, washed and transformed by local partners. The spinning process is carried out by ANTEX’s plant in Mexico. This allows us to distribute to all America without moving the product to Europe.
VIETNAM - Asian vertical chain
The third point on the map is Vietnam, where several cleanups have taken place, we collect PP (fishing nets and ropes). This polymer is locally transformed all the way to reusable PP bags by a local partner.
FROM OCEAN CLEANUPS TO EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS
Marine plastics are harder to recycle. Although plastics can survive in the ocean for hundreds of years, UV rays, salt water, and friction can cause them to degrade quickly. SEAQUAL INITIATIVE is dedicated to giving new life specifically to plastic bottles found in the sea, rivers, and estuaries.
Our process includes dope dye to reduce microplastics and water use, and we are working on introducing chemical recycling to take our product to more industries and increase its circularity.
OUR COMMITMENT TO ESG IS AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO

Environmental
To this day, SEAQUAL INITIATIVE has collected around 800 tons of marine litter, out of which 290 have been transformed into SEAQUAL MARINE PLASTIC, avoiding that they turn into microplastics and cause damage to the environment. According to our latest LCA, our transformation process reduces by 37% CO2 emissions, 34% water consumption and 40% energy use compared to virgin polyester.
Social
When starting SEAQUAL INITIATIVE, it was important for us that we reduced the negative impact while also improving the positive one. Not only on the environment, but also on society. We pay for the plastic they collect at a higher rate than on the market. This allows them to improve their income, invest in more effective systems and machines, have better work conditions.
Governance
The Chain of Custody allows us to ensure the traceability and transparency of our supply chain by giving detailed data on amount of litter collected, type of plastic, amount of tons upcycled, and much more. But like many other things in the industry, we have identified the need to evolve to a digital interface, which will bring a huge increment in the data available and open a wide range of opportunities for business development, research and communication.
